Girls Shred!

One of the refreshing things about the programming at Chester Bowl is that everyone is welcome to participate. We have centered our programming and organizational decisions around the Peace in the Park guidelines. However, when it comes to freestyle skiing, snowboarding, and snowskating we knew that our programming was falling short.

At the start of each year, we noticed that we had equal participation of boys and girls during Freestyle Fridays. By the time we made it to our third Freestyle Friday event of the season the number of girls participating dropped significantly. By the end of the series we had mostly boys participating. If you cast your net further and look at the skiing/snowboarding industry as a whole, you will find that men dominate freestyle skiing and snowboarding and that women are often token members of teams, staff, or are underrepresented in terrain parks and contests.

We came up with a plan to make the terrain park and freestyle skiing, snowboarding, and snowskating more welcoming to girls and young women and developed a program called Girls Shred!

Girls Shred is an opportunity for girls and women to learn how to do freestyle skiing and snowboarding in a fun, supportive, and women led environment. We will be offering seven, girls only lessons during the course of the season. The Girls Shred staff will be at Freestyle Fridays to support the women participating in that event. We will have 4 stand-alone events for Girls Shred only and we will have prizes at each of these functions to encourage girls to participate.

The goal of the program is to create a community of girls who see themselves as freestyle skiers, snowboarders, and snowskaters. We feel that by providing positive female role models who shred, girls can themselves grow into shredders!

Program registration is free and open. All you have to do is sign your girls up by completing a google form. This program is led by all women and is open to girls & non-binary participants who have passed a Level 2 lesson and wants to learn more about freestyle skiing and/or snowboarding. We have registration open and it will remain open so that anyone can get signed up after passing a Level 2 ski or snowboard lesson.
