The Chester Bowl staff team is growing! As our programs continue to grow, our staffing model needs to as well. We are currently hiring for three positions.

We are hiring for a recently vacated Programs Manager position, while also adding a new position- an Operations Manager. Both are full time salaried positions. They each are involved with planning and implementing Chester Bowl programming, with slightly different focus areas, especially in relation to winter programs.

The AmeriCorps Member is a one-year placement at Chester Bowl through the True North AmeriCorps program.

These positions will join Programs and Operations Director Sam Luoma and Executive Director Dave Schaeffer as the year round staff team.

Programs Manager Job Posting

The Chester Bowl Programs Manager is part of a staff team responsible for planning and implementing Chester Bowl programming, with an emphasis on specific programs in the winter, and supporting summer camp as an assistant camp director. 

Chester Bowl is a non-profit offering programs in the City of Duluth Chester Park, based out of theThom Storm Chalet. The mission of Chester Bowl is “to promote sustainable, quality programs for all Chester Bowl Park users in a healthy and safe environment.” Primary programs include a winter alpine program, a summer day camp, Fall Fest, and the Music in the Park concert series. The Programs Manager joins a staff team serving thousands of families each year, helping everyone have equal access to outdoor recreation activities.

Programs Manager key roles and responsibilities:

  • Winter: Implement all specific winter programs, including snow school, Freestyle Fridays, Girls Shred, Alpine Race Series, and the Winter Carnival; supervise and schedule winter program staff; provide customer service including giving out season pass and rentals; support programs and concessions volunteers; provide general operational support as needed while being on site for most days that the hill is open; assist with staff trainings; support snowmaking and other activities to prepare the hill for the season.
  • Summer: Serve as an assistant camp director, directly supporting the three camp sites as needed; assist with staff trainings; staff member for Fall Camp
  • Special Events: Support Fall Fest, Clean Yer Creek, Cheers to Chester, and other special events throughout the year
  • Other: Maintain and role model Peace in the Parks philosophy in daily interactions; support the Cadet programs throughout the year; provide marketing and social media support; coordinate volunteers; be part of program planning throughout the year

Qualifications:

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation, Recreation Administration, Sports Management, Youth programming, Education, or a related field OR a minimum of 2 years of experience directly related to youth recreational programming and/or operational support for similar programs
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, development, and leading of youth programming
  • A commitment to building community, ensuring equitable access to recreation including skiing, snowboarding, and summer camp, and a commitment to the Peace in the Parks philosophy
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, that can vary through the seasons. The work week during winter alpine operations is Thursday through Monday, with daytime hours on weekends and evening hours on most weekdays. The work week during the summer is primarily Monday through Thursdays, 7:30-5:30 daily. There are seasonal workload fluctuations, with some times of year requiring work weeks of over 40 hours, and others allowing for less, with an average of 40 hours per week or slightly over during the course of a year. 
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Must be detailed oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously
  • Ability to use and learn programs such as spreadsheets, email, SignUpGenius, QuickBooks, social media, and other relevant programs
  • Adult and Child CPR/First Aid Certified or willingness and ability to become certified.
  • Must hold current National Ski Patrol certification or willingness and ability to become certified through Chester Bowl when hired; Wilderness First Responder certification may be a suitable replacement
  • Strong interest in alpine skiing or snowboarding and alpine hill management

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

This position includes both indoor and outdoor work. It requires the ability to sit or stand while using a computer for long periods of time. The employee must be able to communicate verbally and in writing with others. This role is active outdoors in all weather, including extreme heat and cold, rain, snow, wind, and sun. The staff member must be able to walk up and down stairs; they also must be able to walk up and down the Alpine hill, including when it is covered in snow. They must be able to stand for long periods of time, walk on dirt paths and uneven surfaces for up to two miles at one time, and lift up to 25 pounds repeatedly. During snowmaking season, they must be able to get to Chester Bowl within 30 minutes to respond to emergencies while on call. 

Compensation Details:

The Programs Manager is a full time, year-round, salaried exempt position. The expected starting salary range is between $50,000 to $60,000, depending on experience. Additional benefits include paid time off (starting with two weeks of vacation time, separate sick time, nine paid holidays and a day off for your birthday, and four weeks of parental leave after one year of employment), free season passes and ski/snowboard rentals for your household, and free summer and fall day camp registration for up to three dependent children. Staff can choose to enroll in a retirement program with a 3% match after two benefit years.

  • Summer: Serve as an assistant camp director, directly supporting the three camp sites as needed; assist with staff trainings; staff member for Fall Camp
  • Special Events: Support Fall Fest, Cheers to Chester, and other special events throughout the year; lead Chester staff for Clean Yer Creek

AmeriCorps Member

Chester Bowl’s AmeriCorps Member is a one-year position with a stipend through the Duluth YMCA’s True North AmeriCorps Program.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Y’s True North AmeriCorps (TNAC) program is dedicated to enhancing long term education equity outcomes by increasing K-8th grade students’ interpersonal skills and social competencies. TNAC members facilitate weekly interventions including positive relationship building, academic enrichment, and individualized skill building with identified students at their site. By engaging positive adults as mentors to provide interventions for youth with unmet needs, the program will improve participants’ interpersonal skills, social competencies, attitude towards learning, and resiliency; ultimately increasing their likelihood to graduate high school on time. This is an AmeriCorps member position.

DESCRIPTION OF SITE

The role of the Chester Bowl AmeriCorps member is to assist with planning and implementation of Chester Bowl programs including the Winter Alpine program, Summer and Fall Day Camps, and the Cadet+ program. In this role, you’ll get hands on experience both working with students day to day, as well as the background experience of developing nature-based curriculum for campers and helping with the logistics of volunteer management of community members. All work will be completed in alignment with Chester Bowl’s mission “to promote sustainable, quality programs for all Chester Bowl Park users in a healthy and safe environment.” If you have a passion for year-round outdoor activities and nature-based education, we’d love to have you serve with us!

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

● Coordinates and delivers formal and informal activities, lessons, and “teachable moments” to build targeted interpersonal skills for identified youth

● Regularly tracks interventions completed with program participants

● Follows procedures to maintain accurate and timely AmeriCorps-specific data entry

● Assists site staff with planned enrichment programming in ways that do not duplicate or displace staff or volunteer duties

● Builds positive developmentally appropriate relationships with youth at site

● Maintains safe and respectful environment for students

● Fosters an inclusive environment appreciative of differences. Meaningfully participates in and leads efforts to support the Y’s commitment to equity and diversity

● Develops and implements a project to engage youth in service learning and leadership, documenting impact including volunteers engaged

● Communicates regularly and effectively with True North staff, Site Supervisor, and other site personnel via phone, email, online systems, and verbal interactions

● Participates in all required True North AmeriCorps meetings and trainings

● Serves as an ambassador of the program by submitting Great Stories and participating in outreach activities
