CBIC Board of Directors Nominations

The Chester Bowl Improvement Club is currently looking for qualified candidates to serve on its Board of Directors.

The Board is responsible for the overall policy and management of the CBIC.  Directors must commit to attending a monthly board meeting – held the second Monday of each month at 6pm – for that purpose, but directors may count hours spent in Board meetings towards committed volunteer hours.  Anyone sharing an interest in supporting sustainable quality programs at Chester Bowl should apply.  Relevant knowledge, skills and experience in not-for-profit organizations, in general, and financial experience, in particular, would be a plus.

If you are interested in nominating yourself or someone you know to serve on CBIC’s board, or if you have any questions, please contact the Nominations committee via Nora Sandstad at 612-965-0749 or ncs@hanftlaw.com.

Cocoa and Chairlift with a counselor

Nothing says LOVE quite like Valentine’s Night at Chester Bowl!

Join Duluth City Councilors Emily Larson and Patrick Boyle, together with their families, for a night of fun at Chester. Emily is an At-Large Councilor who represents parks & rec. Patrick is this years’ Council President and represents District 2, which includes Upper Chester. Both Emily and Patrick are season pass holders of Chester’s ski hill.

If you have questions or concerns about the city, you’ll have a captive council audience! Here’s the schedule:

Date= Thursday February 14th

5:30-6:15 = Chairlift with a Councilor. The ride up the hill takes 2 minutes. Enough time to literally air your gripes. Ski or snowboard back down. Not a pass holder? No problem. Daily lift tickets run a cool $5.50.

6:16-8:30 = Cocoa with a Councilor. Hot issues on your mind? Join us in the chalet where we’ll be slinging healthy snacks like nachos & gummy bears, and washing it all down with some delicious cocoa. Priced right, with snacks ranging from $.25 all the way up to a steep $1.50.

Looking forward to seeing you!

Emily & Patrick

Another plea for concession volunteers.

We have a dilemma at Chester Bowl.
For whatever reason, not enough people are not signing up to volunteer in the concession stand this winter. This has never happened to this extent before. Several days in February have no one signed up.

Without concession volunteers, we can’t really run the ski hill. There will be no food for skiers or ski cadets. Plus, no adults to monitor the chalet activities.

I know many of you have already done your volunteer commitments, but please consider doing a little more. Over February’s winter break, we have a period of 12 days in a row when the chairlift is open, and many days need volunteers. In addition, the end of the month has several days with no volunteers.

Please open up the Jooners link below, and sign up now.

Freestyle Fridays

On most Friday nights at 6:00pm, Sam Luoma, from the Chester Bowl staff, is at the terrain park at the top left of the chairlift. Sam & his crew work with both skiers and snowboarders on how to “ride the rails” and do tricks. Most nights there is a sponsor that provides awards for fun competitions. Everyone is welcome to participate at no cost.

Click for a larger view of the poster and schedule.

Revised Opening Date

The chairlift will open for the season on THURSDAY, DEC. 20th, from 4:30-8:30. We lost 8 potential days of snowmaking last week when we had above freezing temperatures. We are currently making as much snow as possible, to have a good base by opening day.

Non-Skier Lesson Participants-
Now that we have snow on the ground, it will help non-skiers get adjusted to having boots & skis on, if they can walk around outdoors with their skis on. This will help them be ready for lessons when they start on Dec. 26.

New Programs-
Beginning on Monday, January 7th, we will offer free TELEMARK skiing lessons, by Al Hagen, and SNOWBOARDING lessons by Sam Luoma.  Bring your equipment and learn from our experts!  More details will be announced later.  Free!

Ski Race Sponsor-
There is an opening for a ski race sponsor for the March 3rd race.  Please call or email Thom Storm if you would like more details.

Concession Sign ups

Chester Bowl Concession-stand Volunteer Sign up
2012-2013 ski season

In order to receive email notices from Chester Bowl, you must first subscribe to the announcement lists that are sent out. If you haven’t previously received email announcements from Chester Bowl, go to www.chesterbowl.org as soon as you are able, to become a subscriber. “Subscribe to News” is in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Additionally, you will be asked to provide your email address as part of your contact information at the ski fitting in November. We need both in order for you to receive our email notices.

The end of November you will receive an email with the following links for the on-line volunteer sign up. You can wait until then before signing up for volunteer shifts, or if you would like to sign up sooner, use the following links:
To sign up for volunteer shifts in December, click this link

January shifts;

February shifts;

March shifts;

Once there, provide your email address at the top of the page and fill in the volunteer shift(s) you’re interested in. Then scroll down to the ‘Sign up’ button at the bottom of the page. You will be asked to confirm your email address, and select ‘Sign up’ again. By doing so, you will receive a confirmation notice telling you the sign up is complete. Three days before each scheduled volunteer shift, you will receive an e-mail reminder about your commitment. You will also get a reminder call from the volunteer coordinator for that month, in case you don’t check email frequently.

The volunteer coordinators for each month are:
Liz Carlson (Dec. 15 – Jan. 15) 428-3235

Lynn & Bob Henderson (Jan.16 – Feb.15) 724-4732

Jodi Symens (Feb.16 – Mar. 10) 525-7208

If you have a conflict with your volunteer commitment, you must try three replacements before contacting the volunteer coordinator. After that, be sure to call that month’s coordinator as soon as possible, so a replacement can be found to cover your shift. It’s very important that each shift is staffed by three volunteers.

Questions about how to use the on-line sign-up, call Liz Carlson; 428-3235.

Happy skiing!
